If this is the case, progress will remain unsalvageable, even with Patch 1.3.4. Depending on the console settings, the cloud save may have been overwritten by the “deleted” save game noted above. With an intact save game from PS+, players can safely restore and continue playing with Patch 1.3.4 installed. In those cases, please try using a backed up save from PS+ if available, after installing Patch 1.3.4. These save games are not directly salvageable by Patch 1.3.4, without a backup save game available. Unfortunately other save games will have been effectively “deleted” by Patch 1.3.3, with their file size reducing to 0KB. Players with those save games are able to safely continue their progress after installing Patch 1.3.4, without the need for using a backed up save game. Some game saves will have become corrupted with Patch 1.3.3, but maintained their file size. Here’s the breakdown, straight from Housemarque: Some players will have their save files restored after downloading the new patch, but some players won’t. Housemarque, in a blog post, also explained problems players had with save data during the previous patch. Patch 1.3.4 also fixed some issues, like “a known Trophies issues” and a “keyboard exploit.” Patch 1.3.4 brings Returnal to an earlier, stable build (1.3.1) after Patch 1.3.3 produced game-breaking issues for some players.

Update (May 6): Returnal developer Housemarque released a new patch for the PlayStation 5 game Thursday. We’ve reached out to Housemarque for clarification regarding the issue, and we’ll update this article with any information we receive. On Tuesday, Housemarque encouraged players to turn off the PlayStation 5’s auto-update feature in anticipation of the new patch - if the update started midrun, it would cause players to lose progress. In tweet replies, Housemarque is asking players not to boot up the game “before the upcoming patch is available and downloaded,” in case they were unknowingly affected by the update.
However, it seemed to have made this worse for plenty of players. Wednesday’s patch wasn’t going to add a save system, but was intended to fix some of the issues that led to crashes and lost progress. This is a major problem, because Returnal doesn’t allow midrun saving - meaning that a problem or crash in the middle of a multiple-hour run could result in losing large chunks of progress.
